What changes to California Medi-Cal asset limits in July 2027?

The short answer

DHCS says California's general Medi-Cal asset limit will change on July 1, 2027, for people subject to the asset test. The published amounts are $21,000 for one person and $31,000 for two, with $1,550 added for each additional eligible household member, up to 10. Some married long-term-care cases use different protections.

Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program. DHCS is the California Department of Health Care Services.

What does DHCS say will change?

For the affected Medi-Cal groups, DHCS lists $21,000 for one person and $31,000 for two beginning July 1, 2027. It lists another $1,550 for each additional person, up to 10 people. The household count is not simply everyone living under one roof.

What is the rule before July 2027?

Through June 30, 2027, DHCS lists $130,000 for one person, plus $65,000 for each additional eligible household member, up to 10. Keep the current and future dates beside the figures; they should never be read as a single range.

Who needs a closer look?

DHCS says the asset test applies to certain people age 65 or older, people with disabilities, nursing-home residents, and some other Medi-Cal groups. Special rules may protect a spouse who remains at home. The future general figure by itself cannot settle a married applicant's eligibility.

What should your family do now?

Check the date of the next application or renewal, the program involved, and which assets the county counts. Reopen the DHCS page close to July 2027 because future policy can change. The county Medi-Cal office can explain how the published rule applies to the case.
